		<description>My list of tolerations feels like it grows faster than the speed at which I can do them. The dogs are responsible for this! I have a very strong hunch. Maybe I can put my out-of-work artist to work on some of these things. Delegation--could that be step 5? ;)</description>

		<description>Well, these are companies paying very close attention to OFCCP and Sarbanes-Oxley so I think they&#039;d only do it if it was in fact legal. 

The rationale I think comes from the flip side of the coin. The first side being &quot;a company should pay what they think someone is worth.&quot; So the flip side is: &quot;why would we pay a 20-30% premium for an unknown quantity when the people who know him are only willing to pay X.&quot;

You should realistically aim for a 10% increase, more if there&#039;s a big shift happening in this new role (i.e. if your value-add is being increased, or commute, lifestyle expectations, travel, hours). 

Some companies really do have strict budgets and try not to hire new people at much higher levels than current loyal employees, so if you do get offered a lateral move or less than you&#039;re currently making, don&#039;t be offended. This is business, not personal. The decision to accept is of course personal, but you simply weigh what non-tangibles you gain vs. what you&#039;re leaving behind.</description>

You need to practice in the shower, in the mirror, to other people you trust while looking in their eyes. If you can&#039;t convince a company/hiring manager you&#039;re worth 185K, they might start to look for reasons to believe you aren&#039;t, and offer you less.

Also, most places I&#039;ve worked have asked that the budget NOT be shared, that salary data not be given to the candidates, so when a candidate does ask, the recruiters have to turn it back on them, &quot;it&#039;s easier if you tell me what salary you&#039;re looking for, then we can see if we&#039;re in the same ballpark.&quot;

I firmly believe that you should provide a range and a rationale for it: &quot;Depending on how much management responsibility I would have, depending on how much travel &amp; client contact there would be, I&#039;m looking for $165-185K.&quot;
